Five challenge levels presumably means at least five new VIP bots, potentially even more as the last set of DLC levels includes two new Bots per level. With only one of the new Bot’s identities confirmed so far, that leaves the door open for more cameos fans have been waiting for. During today’s State of Play, Team Asobi’s lead announced that Astro Bot is getting five more challenge levels later this month as part of another free update. An extra level of difficulty can be found in the semi-hidden trial-like stages found by exploring among the overworld’s stars, though.

Everything glistens with the technology-based gleam that has come to be expected of the Astro world. Environments, while emulating the look of tropical beachfronts, molten volcanoes, and bustling jungles, still have this shimmer of being held together by plates of steel and other metallic materials. Dream Traveler is the second bot found in Balloon Breeze and is inspired by Klonoa, the main protagonist from the Klonoa series. You can find this puzzle piece midair at the top of the balloon. On the fourth checkpoint, the one where you encounter some logs, the puzzle piece is located in the vertical log on the side.
After rescuing the two Rising Heat Cameo Bots, players will be able to procure items for them from the Gatcha Lab at the Crash Site. Cayde-6 gets a Hand Cannon and Light Partner, while Wesker gets a Viral Vial. One of Astro Bot’s hidden trophies is called “The Lost Eggacy”. To unlock this trophy, you need to find all three Golden Egg “artifacts” on the Dude Raiding world of Serpent Starway. The Dude Raiding level unlocks after you defeat the final boss of Serpent Starway, Lady Venomara.
I arrived at the end credits after nine hours but had only collected 206 out of a possible 301 bots on my journey. There’s plenty to do after the main levels are done, including finding the remainder of the crew, building out the rest of the hub base, and unearthing new secrets among the stars. There’s so much, in fact, that it took me another nine hours (so, 18 in total) to 100% Astro Bot and acquire the platinum trophy that comes with it. While I’d never say any of its main worlds ever approach being truly “difficult” in the pursuit of that 100% completion goal, some enemies or obstacles did take a few tries. Thankfully, checkpoints are often generously and frequently located, meaning you’re only ever moments away from the spot of your previous demise. The Sponge appears in the Bathhouse Battle stage of Astro Bot and has similar powers to the Elephant.

If you watch long enough, you’ll see that one of them is actually a generic bot. Just before you lift the massive bridge out of the ground, you’ll find some moving metal boxes in the poison lake to the right. Cross them (destroying them as you go) and then boost up when you reach the final platform. You’ll reach another PlayStation bot hanging in the mouth of a gold snake statue. At the start of nearly every level, Astro jumps into a suit or straps on a backpack of some kind that gives them a new ability. In one level, it’s spring-powered boxing gloves resembling cartoon frogs. In another, it’s a robo-dog that gives the bipedal bot a wall-smashing rocket boost, or in another, a time-freezing tool that allows Astro to scale otherwise impossibly fast-moving sections.
This mechanical focus allowed Team Asobi to perfect each move and then apply them all in a thousand different ways, and the result is a rewarding and robust platformer. Its best attribute, a rumble feature more nuanced than what other controllers provide, is also simpler than all of the DualSense’s high-end abilities that sometimes come off as gimmicky. Astro Bot also did away with some of them from Astro’s Playroom, such as using the center touchpad to unzip some blockades.
But it’s the temporary abilities that come with each level that make things truly exciting. The Twin Frog gloves are a particular favourite, with their sticky tongues flinging out to provide a grapple swing option. They’re also spring-loaded, meaning any incoming projectiles can be sent back from whence they came, exploding in an enemy’s face. I also very much enjoyed the mouse mechanic, which reduces you down to a super small size, effectively turning on a “Toy Story” mode that lets you clamber up oversized shelves and leaves in search of secrets. The Time Stopper combines a pair of VR goggles players can strap onto their hero and a literal watch on the back. When players stop time, they can halt attacks like buzz saws hurtling toward them.
